Discover new perspectives at the Dachstein

The Dachstein Glacier Cable Car first opened in June 1969. This marked the beginning of the success story of one of Austria’s most popular tourist destinations. With the reopening of the extensively renovated and modernized Dachstein mountain station in 2024, a new chapter began on the Dachstein Glacier. The new attractions draw greater attention to the global, regional, and local implications of ongoing climate change. They highlight how these changes affect people, nature, and the environment, and create space for new perspectives.

Art Object “Energy Crystal”

Near the Dachstein mountain station, the impressive art installation “Energiekristall” awaits you. The structure, made of Corten steel and standing exactly 2,995 mm tall, was created under the artistic direction of Mürzzuschlag-based artist Michael Gletthofer. The artwork was inspired by the unique power of the Dachstein Glacier and its impact on people and nature. At the same time, it addresses the themes of sustainability and energy efficiency.

The approximately 1,000 m² photovoltaic glass facade generates about 80% of the energy required for the Dachstein mountain station. With its imposing ice fields, rugged peaks, and crisp mountain air, the Dachstein creates a special place of tranquility and inspiration. Let the high-alpine surroundings work their magic on you and discover the Energy Crystal as a symbol of nature, power, and sustainable energy.

Weather and Clothing

at the Dachstein Glacier

The Dachstein mountain station is located at an elevation of about 2,700 meters above sea level. As a result, the weather and temperatures can differ significantly from conditions in the valley. Be sure to check the current conditions on the mountain before your trip.

For your visit, we recommend warm clothing and multiple layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures. Even in summer, you should bring an extra warm layer. Sturdy, appropriate footwear is essential for trails in high-alpine terrain.

In case of bad weather, certain attractions or areas may be closed. Therefore, check the current glacier report before heading up.
